I'm back!

For one post only, one post only la la la la la la! After lots of thought I've decided to start blogging again but as the title of this one is kind of out of date now I've moved to http://takingscenic-route.blogspot.com/. It won't be much use if you want to read about Thailand but if you liked my old dating stories the girl is back in action - well trying anyway!!

Going home

I'm hanging in there this week until I can go home. Hopefully on Monday we will sign the house over to my friend so the money is protected. Nung has agreed so far but it's still a case of waiting until he actually signs. He's been really annoying, phoning all the time and begging for another chance. He just doesn't understand that there is no trust left and I don't believe a word he says - how can you have a relationship after the trust is gone. I'm staying with some amazing friends who are keeping me sane until I can get home next week. One thing I have realised from all this is how great my friends are and how lucky I am in that respect.

I guess some people may use my story to prove their stereotype of Thai men but I know at least 10 farang women with happy marriages to Thai men. It's not because Nung is Thai that this happened as I could have married an English man and he turned out to be a gambler. I just got unlucky and there were no signs before the last 2 months to warn me.

So, I've decided to go home for at least a year to get some space from the situation and sort my head out. Guess it's goodbye for this blog but thank you to everyone who has read and commented in the past.

Big changes

Wow it's been so long since I wrote and right now everything is changing for me. The year started really well as we moved into our new house but since then it's all been downhill. First I found out Nung had taken money from my english bank account behind my back. Then I found out he'd taken out a 50,000baht loan from some guy and used most of it on gambling. I gave him the last chance ultimatum then but it's only got worse. In the past week I've found out he's refinanced the car without telling me, stolen my atm card again behind my back even though I thought I'd hidden it really well, he pawned my video camera and told me his friend had borrowed it and my laptop has disappeared too so I assume that's gone the same way.

I've had the worst week of my life trying to pretend everything is ok between us whilst I try and save the house. It's in both our names so I'm hoping I'm not going to lose all the money from that as well. I've also been pretending at school that nothing is going on as I didn't want to break down in front of the kids. School finished on Friday so thank god I can tell them what's going on now. I was planning on going back to England for a while but I love my job here so now I'm trying to sort things out so I can stay. I'm not telling Nung I'm staying, though, as I figure he won't leave me alone. Hopefully as from tomorrow he will have no house, money or job and huge debts that I won't be paying he will head back to Ubon and leave me in peace.

Life really sucks sometimes....

Happy Christmas everyone!

Photos of our new house

Our lovely new house, which hopefully we will be able to move into this weekend if the water company ever connect us - it's only been 3 weeks!

We had to have elephant screens of course as it's my house. The pineapples are a little odd but I like them.

Here Nung is demonstrating the size of our lounge I think.

New House Ceremonies

Finally we got the the house sorted and today it is officially ours!! We had some money transfer problems between banks last week so our planned ceremonies on Sat and Sun were in doubt but luckily they let us do them anyway. Unfortunately for me it wasn't the best weekend of my life, though.

On Saturday Nung was up early to sort things out and I woke up with a headache, which got worse as the day went on. I finished my private class at 3pm and really wanted to go home and lie down but the first ceremony was starting at 4ish. Nung picked me up and took me to the house where Nung's mother, aunt, sister, sister's boyfriend and a few friends were waiting with the holy man. We then had to walk half way down the road and parade back holding various different objects. Nung had a Buddha, I got a plate with leaves on it and the others had pots and pans, bedding and some fish sauce. When we got to the house we had to walk around it 3 times. By now my head was killing me as it was really hot and sunny.

Nung's mother then sat inside the house and we seemed to be asking for permission to enter, which was slightly annoying as all I could think was that I paid for the damn house and I have to ask her for permission to go inside. Nung then washed the holy man's feet in water, although he was wearing socks so that was a little bizarre. Once inside I had to watch the holy man bang a nail into my lovely new wall and then spray the place with holy water. Nung then had the pleasure of drinking some water flavoured with perfume and candle wax. I passed on that as I was started to feel nauseous from my headache and figured that wouldn't help.

The last bit of craziness involved me and Nung having to lie on a bed completely covered with a blanket whilst one guy clapped his hands and made chicken noises to wake us up. We weren't allowed to wake up until the third time. Apparently that will make us rich - I'll let you know how that goes!

After the ceremony I went home and was puking all evening. Nung said he really wanted me to be there on Sunday as we would give food to the monks but I really wasn't looking forward to it. Nung told me it would start at 7am and I woke up alone at 7.30am and figured Nung had decided to let me off as I was ill. At 8.30 I got a call from Nung asking if I was ready as he was coming to get me, yeah he hadn't let me off he'd just got the times wrong. Nung then drove like a crazy man to the house as the monks had already arrived so by the time I got there I was ready to vomit. I managed to get through most of the ceremony until I had to put food in each of the bowls then afterwards I had to rush outside and be sick. I went back for the last bit but just felt like crap.

Nung was a complete arse, which made it even worse. All he could say is why aren't you smiling, why aren't you eating, you should be happy as today is a celebration. If I'd had the energy I would've smacked him round the head. I had to put up with everyone trying to force food down me half an hour after I'd been ill. Finally I managed to get home and sleep for a few hours and by Sunday evening felt so much better. I can guarantee the next time Nung is sick he's not getting any sympathy from me, though.

Surprise, Surprise!

On Tuesday I got a call from Nung with some exciting news - mother in law had made a surprise visit - lucky me. We were expecting her on Saturday as we'd planned to move into our new house this weekend and she organises all our Buddhist ceremonies for us, at considerable financial cost to me usually. Apparently she wanted to check out the house first, though, I guess so Nung's uncle can work out how many extra people he can invite. Sorry I sound bitchy and ungrateful but after the wedding which was 3 times more expensive than it was meant to be, with 60 extra people me and Nung didn't know or agree to, I can't help it.

I had the day off on Wednesday for Constitution Day so we spent 2 hours driving all around KK with mother's shopping list of things for Saturday. We could have gone to Big C and bought everything within half an hour but no we had to visit every market in town. We ended up with 3 different sized buckets, 4 brooms, 3 coconuts and a small plastic container and I have absolutely no idea what use those are going to be for this ceremony?!

Unfortunately today we've had some money transfer problems which means we have to put everything off by a week. Not sure how that will mess up the monks predictions for our lucky day to move in or mother's invites. The good news is I have a school rally the following weekend so I won't be around for any of the work of moving house or the ceremony. I'm slightly concerned about what they will have done to the house by the time I get back but I've then got 2 weeks holiday to get it back to how I want it.
